You can see the file on newmisserver\public from a computer, but on a Mac, you can’t see this file. The file also contains the name of the owner who is currently editing the document. For Example: The filename of “ myfile.doc” will have an ownership file name “ ~$myfile.doc”, both the files are created on newmisserver\public. Microsoft’s office creates a temporary ownership file for their Excel and Word, this file is present in the location of the document, having “ ~$” followed by the name of the file. If the Excel file a Word file saved on the server then it is possible that the same file is getting used by another person at the same time. If you haven’t quit the Excel file properly then the Excel application becomes unable to delete the owner file and hence when the user tries to open/edit the Excel file then they get “The document is locked for editing by another user” error message.
If you or your IT person are not able to close the file, please contact the ITS Help Desk with a complete path to the file.There are lots of causes that can trigger this type of error and prevent the user from editing Excel or word file.
Delete the file once you have verified that the owner of the file does not have it open.
Once you know the owner name, contact that person and double check that they do not have the file open. At the top there will be an Owner listed. Select the Security Tab and click on Advanced. If it is more than a few days old, you are probably safe to delete it.
You will now see a file with the same name that has a tilde (~) character in front of the file name.
Navigate to the folder on the shared drive where the file is locked.
To do this, open up file explorer and select the View tab and select "Hidden Items".
Temporarily turn on hidden files and folders.
Generally what happens is that the last person using the file got disconnected or did not get logged out correctly and a "hidden" file gets left behind - holding the file open. Occasionally, you might get an error when trying to open an Excel file on a Shared Drive that says "someone has this file open" and it will not let you open or edit the file.
